Biodegradable: Products that break down (with the assistance of microorganisms) into safe materials
Carbon footprint: The amount of carbon dioxide emissions created by a product, person, or company
Compostable: A material that breaks down over time into dirt
Organic: Products grown or manufactured naturally, without chemical enhancement
Polyethylene terepthalate (PET): Used to make recyclable containers that leave no toxic residue when they are broken down
Polyethylene vinyl acetate (PEVA): A chlorine-free alternative to more hazardous PVC
Recycling: Disassembling products so they can become raw materials for future manufacturing
Renewable: A resource that is replenished through a fast natural process (such as quick-growing bamboo)
Volatile Organic Compound (VOC): Chemicals emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids (such as paint or cleaning supplies) that can have adverse health effects
